This region of Manitoba
is known for producing beautiful, dark chocolate, typical and non
typical trophy white-tails. Archers deer hunt from comfortable,
tree stands with ladder sticks that provide safe, easy access.
Terrain is river bottom valley winding through productive
agricultural land. Early season stand sites are typically located
in travel corridors - bottlenecks or river crossings - between
bedding and feeding areas.
During the early season, bucks are still in bachelor groups and summer patterns. Other than during the rut, bucks are especially vulnerable at this time. We run 1 hunter per 1000 acres of land to minimize hunting pressure in these areas. Temperatures generally range from freezing at night to about 70 during the day, making for comfortable hunting.
The last week of archery season is reserved for diehards. Does begin coming into estrous and mature bucks start becoming foolish. Stands are placed along scrape lines and close to doe bedding areas. Temperatures can dip down to 0 at night and just break freezing for day-time highs. Rattling is highly effective during this time.
Rifle and muzzleloader hunts occur along the southern border of the Manitoba's Riding Mountain National Park. Hunters hunt from ladder stands or elevated blinds equipped with heaters. These sites are located along scrape lines and near doe bedding areas. The terrain is mixed spruce/poplar with willow swamps along the agricultural fringe, bordering big bush country. Hunters are instructed to sit in their stands all day as many of our largest bucks have been taken mid-day, between 10 and 2. Pack lunches and thermoses of hot coffee are provided.
