Beyond Expectation

Uruguay Duck HuntingRamsey Russell GetDucks.com is proud to offer a variety of unique, high-quality  duck, dove, perdiz and pigeon hunts in Uruguay. That Uruguay has not yet received as much attention for excellent wingshooting as Argentina is a good thing - a very good thing.  As you will find here, there is something for almost everyone; a very nice selection of duck, dove, pigeon and perdiz combination hutn packages are available in Uruguay.

About the same size as Pennsylvania, Uruguay is the second smallest sovereign nation in South America and boasts about 97% literacy. The landscape features mostly rolling plains, low hill ranges with fertile coastal lowlands. A dense fluvial network covers the country, consisting of four river basins or deltas; the Río de la Plata, the Uruguay River, the Laguna Merín, and the Río Negro. More than half of its 3.5 million residents live in the capital city of Montevideo.

Uruguay is a world-class duck hunting destination in its own right. Bordered by Argentina, Brazil and the Atlantic Ocean, the northern portion of Uruguay is low-lying area intersected by large rivers and canals; the land use is predominately by cattle and rice production. The name Uruguay originates from the native Guaraní language, and is translated as “river where the birds live”. The ducks certainly love Uruguay, and as a duck or upland hunter. You will too.

Thousands of private acres rife with rice field swags, low spots and stock tanks ensure ample shooting opportunities for an abundance of ducks. Our returning hunters from Uruguay proudly boast the fast shooting action; nearly the consistency and liberal limits of Argentina in an area that’s not yet received nearly as much hunting pressure. Seeing is believing, our duck hunting  video above is more than convincing.

Uruguay Dove HuntingUruguay is unquestionably the world’s foremost destination to perdiz hunt. Habitat, climate and land use patterns are absolutely perfect. Perdiz are an upland game bird somewhat bigger than bobwhite quail. On a normal morning, two hunters, a savvy dog and guide will flush 30-50 perdiz in two hours of easy walking. Perdiz hunts typically involve very short short grass cover. It is amazing how effectively perdiz can hide in what appears to be otherwise quiet open ground. I’ve had perdiz literally explode from between my feet in ankle-tall cover! Unlike bobwhite quail, perdiz are usually found in singles and pairs. Great dog work, a leisurely walking pace, exciting flushes and quick shotgunning define perdiz hunting. Clients that pine for the golden days of hunting wild bobwhites quail behind rock-solid pointers will relish this wonderful hunting experience.

Dove hunt Uruguay year-long. The western Colonia and Rio Negro provinces especially are defined by large agricultural areas of sorghum, sunflower and soybeans that attract large numbers of eared dove.  The eared dove, so named because of the darl patch of feathers on its cheek, looks very similar to the mourning dove found here in the U.S. While Uruguay’s dove hunts are not quite the potential high-volume of our Cordoba, Argentina, dove hunts, they are without exception very good by U.S. standards: expect to fire upwards of 1500 shotshells very easily during an average afternoon dove hunt. Small bore shotguns such as 20 and 28 gauges are the norm. The dove fly all day, but afternoon dove hunts will involve your being strategically located between feeding areas and roosts. Shoot until your heart – and arm – is content!

Uruguay Pigeon HuntingA great pigeon hunt s must-do for serious wingshooters. Pigeon hunting in Uruguay is a perfected art; carefully brushed blinds are used to conceal hunters in agricultural areas of sunflowers and sorghum where pigeons are most prolific, static and motion decoys are places in surrounding vegetation to attract spot-winged and pica zuro pigeons as surely and as certainly as any duck has ever decoyed.  These pigeons are strong and agile fliers; true pigeon hunting is often regarded as the most sporting and challenging of all wingshooting endeavors. While Uruguay pigeon hunting will by no means rival the sheer volume of pigeon shooting found in other venues, it is the perfectly sporting compliment to the excellent duck, perdiz and duck hunting very readily available in Uruguay.

Uruguay Hunt Option 4: Developing! New Duck Hunting in Northwestern Uruguay

Uruguay Banded DuckThis venue is located in northwestern Uruguay, adjacent to Brazil; is primarily a duck hunt.  This particular region of Uruguay has never been commercially duck hunted. Owing to a tight network of landowners and farmers, and the additional logistical involvement with reaching this region, the area will likely never be as intensively explited as eastern Uruguay.  But you better believe that a duck hunt here is nothing short of phenomenal This area is dominated by vast marshes, low-lying pastures, sugarcane and rice crops, vaguely reminiscent of southern Louisiana.
