Whistlers and wigeon squeals cut through the dark the next morning as he and I sat a small pond. Colors peeped from the shadows as ducks splashed down. By 8 a.m., I'd broken the extractor on my old gun and Diego and I had to take turns with his Beretta, chiding each other's shooting from our layouts. We quit shy of our limit after I swung on a flock of five teal, aimed for the lead bird, killed the three behind it in one shot, and then shot the fifth. Enough, already.

The staccato voices echoed down the shore as I peered into the slow-rising sun for the one bird that had brought me thousands of miles in January to a small island in the middle of Alaska's Bering Sea.
And there it was: a drake king eider.

It's a fact we learned in kindergarten: Water runs downhill.  It collects in low-lying areas, forming wetlands.  Generally speaking, it is there that waterfowl - and waterfowl hunters - spend favored days of their lives.  But generally speaking, there are exceptions to every rule.  The rugged Andes Mountains in which Peru duck hunting takes place is one such exception.

With a desire for late season birds with taxidermy-quality plumage, we selected the last week of October 2011 for our hunt. Our waterfowling itinerary included sea ducks, diving ducks, puddle ducks, Pacific black brant and Canada geese. In addition, we planned to hunt willow ptarmigan...We have hunted many states and countries and agreed that this hunt was among each of our top five favorites.

Passion drives the thing. Traveling to hunt is no longer for elitists. One of my favorite hunts last year was a Maine eider expedition.  The guys in camp were regular Joes with guns from DU banquets, and it was their second trip - during a recession! So I talked to Ramsey Russell, a biologist and international man of duck-hunting mystery, who brokers hunts all over the planet. We came up with a list of reasonably priced must-do hunts in the Americas.

This list is merely a good start. Print out these pages, paste them on the fridge, circle a dream hunt or two and go tell your wife what you want for Christmas. You won't have to twist her arm to go to Mexico. Whether it's 37 species you seek or just great experiences, the only thing that happens if you wait, is you get older.
